Our Veterinary Recommendations

As animal owners ourselves, we’ve relied on veterinary care for our horses, dogs, and cats through both everyday health needs and unexpected emergencies.

Finding a veterinarian you trust makes all the difference. If you’re looking for guidance, we’ve shared below the local veterinary clinics we know, trust, and confidently recommend based on our own experiences.

Dr Kim Johnson

Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital

Kim first came to Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital in 2008 after graduating from The University of Melbourne with first-class honours, earning the title of Dux of her year. In 2009, she joined the team at The Veterinary Surgery in Yarrambat and North Warrandyte, gaining experience across all areas of mixed veterinary practice, with a particular focus on horses. In 2013, Kim returned to Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital as co-owner alongside Ben.

She has always had a strong passion for horses and particularly enjoys equine work. In 2012, she qualified for Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Medicine of Horses. Kim has also completed a postgraduate course in equine dentistry and regularly attends conferences to maintain her continuing education. Her veterinary interests span all aspects of equine care, with a special focus on medicine, reproduction, and dentistry, while she also enjoys small animal medicine and small ruminant work.

Kim’s own pets include a cat named Bob Dylan, a wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier named Barney, and a Maltese dog Samir, all of whom accompany her to work. She rides and cares for her three horses—George, Nina, and Missy—as well as her retired horse, Amber. Kim is a member of the Australian Veterinary Association and Equine Veterinarians Australia.

Dr Jack Porter

South Eastern Equine Hospital

Jack graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2020 prior to completing an 18 month internship here at South Eastern Equine Hospital. Having further developed his clinical knowledge and skills in the hospital, Jack will now be dedicated to our clients on the road. You may also catch him in the hospital after hours.

Growing up in East Gippsland, Jack was a keen eventer and loved competing in games at gymkhanas – the faster the better. Since moving to Melbourne in 2015 he doesn’t get to ride as much anymore but still enjoys going for trail rides back home with family.

In his spare time you will find Jack training for triathlons, walking his dog Lola or surf lifesaving in Lakes Entrance.
